Canberra became the first jet aircraft to make a non-stop transatlantic flight and amongst the performance requirements for the type was the demand for a high altitude bombing capability in addition to flying at high speeds, and in February 1951, and throughout most of the decade, the Canberra could

fly at a higher altitude than any other bomber or even any other aircraft, establishing a world altitude record of 70,310ft in 1957. The Canberra proved to be a highly adaptable airframe, and following the entry of the Vickers Valiant, the first of the trio of V Bombers in to RAF service in 1955, (

see Flight Craft 7 'Valiant, Victor and Vulcan') which were capable of carrying much heavier weapon loads (including nuclear weapons) over longer ranges, the Canberra continued to serve in a variety of varied roles including tactical nuclear strike, low-level strike and ground attack in its B(I).6 a

nd B(I).8 variants, photographic and electronic reconnaissance platform in its PR variants, multi-task training aircraft and inevitably its invaluable service with specialized MoD Test and Evaluation units. Serving in all the RAF's Theatres of Operations including the UK, the Middle and Far East and

RAF Germany, the RAF continued to operate the Canberra for 50 years from the Suez Crisis in November 1956 to its service in Afghanistan in June 2006. The Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm also operated Canberras, initially as radio controlled target drones and later by the Fleet Requirements Unit. Althoug

h outside the scope of this particular title, it is of interest to note that the Canberra was a significant aircraft on the export market, being operated by the air forces of many nations and was license produced in Australia and the USA.

麗紋石龍子(Plestiodon elegans)在臺灣的族群遺傳分化與隱蔽種

廣泛分布的物種在現今空間上的遺傳結構分布,往往是由過去的地質事件或氣候事件所造成。受惠於分子技術的進步,某些在遺傳上有分化,但在形態上卻非常相似的隱藏譜系得以被發現,顯示兩棲爬行動物在台灣的物種多樣性是被低估的。隱蔽種的發現對於演化理論 、生物地理和保育政策的制定有著深遠 的影響,也能進而探究其種化機制或是種化歷史。麗紋石龍子( Plestiodon elegans)廣泛分布於中國大陸 、 釣魚台列嶼 、 澎湖以及台灣本島, 是台灣唯一分布海拔跨越 0到 3000公尺左右的蜥蜴,然而對此物種的族群遺傳結構研究甚少。為了 瞭解麗紋石龍子在台灣的遺傳分化,我們在全島 包含 1700公尺以上高海拔

地區 、 澎湖和龜山島,以及代表中國族群的馬祖進行採集, 利用定序取得遺傳資料,包括粒線體的cytochrome b和 ND1以及核基因的 RAG-1和 PRLR片段,重建親緣關係,比較各地族群的遺傳差異和分化時間,並進行形態分析。分子遺傳結果顯示在粒線體片段中,台灣東西部的麗紋石龍子並不呈現單系群。台東附近由低到高海拔的族群為一獨立的單系群,且與台灣其餘族群的遺傳距離高於其他在琉球群島的幾個近緣種。而核基因由於序列相對保守,較無可供辨識的序列特徵 。形態分析結果顯示,台東族群的頭部鱗片 包括眶前鱗、眶後鱗、上睫鱗、下唇鱗、頸鱗)、前肢第二指指墊數和後肢第二、第四趾趾墊數 (RFII、RTII

、 RTIV)、吻肛長( SVL)以及 頭深 (HD)皆顯著不同於台灣其餘族群。綜合以上,麗紋石龍子在台東的族群應為一獨立的新種,其分類地位必須進行重新的描述。

捕食者與核心物種之視覺及聽覺訊號在鳥類滋擾反應中的影響

對於許多小型燕雀目鳥類而言,群聚滋擾反應(mobbing response)為常用且積極的禦敵策略。相同或不同物種的個體會發出激烈的警戒叫聲或是對捕食者振翅、啄擊,將活動範圍內的捕食者驅離,降低未來的被捕食風險。大部分滋擾反應研究使用特定物種的視覺或是聽覺等單獨訊號,誘使鳥群發出滋擾反應。然而,不同物種及訊號類型的效果差異卻少有人討論。本研究利用鵂鶹(Glaucidium brodiei;捕食者)的標本、鳴叫聲以及繡眼畫眉(Alcippe morrisonia;低海拔鳥類混群核心物種)的滋擾叫聲作為訊號,探討不同視覺及聽覺訊號、捕食者及核心物種叫聲等不同組合的六種組別對於小型燕雀目鳥類滋擾反

應的影響。我於2020年3至5月(繁殖季)、2020年12月至2021年2月(非繁殖季)在臺灣中部低海拔森林中選擇24個樣區以拉丁方格設計進行回播實驗,利用參與滋擾反應與否、滋擾反應分級、滋擾反應的延遲時間以及持續時間作為滋擾反應強度指標,比較不同訊號組合在滋擾反應上的差異。在兩季節共進行263次實驗,並記錄29種鳥、408隻個體。結果顯示,在兩季節中,「只有視覺訊號」的組別參與較「只有聽覺訊號」低,代表聽覺訊號較視覺訊號更能吸引鳥類的滋擾反應。兩季節的「合併視覺及聽覺訊號」和「只有聽覺訊號」擁有相同反應,同樣表示視覺訊號的效果並不明顯。另外,在非繁殖季時,「只有鵂鶹鳴叫聲」的參與較「只有繡眼

畫眉滋擾叫聲」高,但繁殖季卻沒有差異,可能代表捕食者於非繁殖季較核心物種更能直接反應被捕食風險。本研究除了測試訊號類型的差異、比較捕食者及核心物種訊號的滋擾反應效果,更提供繡眼畫眉作為低海拔鳥類混群核心物種在禦敵行為上的指標性。由於滋擾反應及多物種混群會受到環境、物種組成及特性等因素影響,各地區的研究論點可能不完全適用其他區域。因此,依然有許多議題尚待探討,以提供更多方面的見解及討論。
