近十年來，嘻哈已經成為世界青少年流行文化，現今的嘻哈文化成為一種流行音樂形式、時尚風格、生活方式。 1974 年普世祖魯國度率先嘻哈一詞來描述這個由五個元素所組成的文化:B-Boy(舞蹈藝術)、MC(文學與音樂藝術)、DJ(音樂藝術)、塗鴉(視覺藝術)並且以第五元素─知識─連結所有藝術形式，成為一個跨領域的藝術文化。 嘻哈除了藝術實踐之外也強調社區投入以促進文化發展。自 1991 年起，美國學者Powell 率先提出嘻哈在學術上的應用價值，隨後發展成嘻哈教學法，本研究將探討嘻哈及嘻哈教學法，並以此設計嘻哈課程，研究嘻哈課程對於高職表演藝術科學生文化智商程度之影響。
